Background Checks

All adults (18 and older) living or working in your home need to pass/clear a background check and fingerprinting. NO EXCEPTIONS While not all crimes will stop you from becoming licensed, everyone living or working in your home must disclose all convictions. Non-compliance with background checks and fingerprinting is serious. Those affected by convictions may get exemptions that allow licensing. It is crucial to know disqualifying or non-exemptible crimes before starting the process. Here is a link that describes the exemption process and also details the non-exemptible crimes that stop the licensing process. Click for Exemptions.

  • Fingerprinting Process: Fingerprinting is done through Live Scan, which is a digital fingerprinting system. All adults in the home must schedule an appointment with a Live Scan provider, bring the required form (LIC 9163), and provide valid identification. The Live Scan operator submits the fingerprints to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for review. Any convictions or issues will be evaluated to determine if the individual can safely be in a child care environment. Licensing approval cannot proceed until all background checks are cleared.
