Positive Child Interactions

How do my daily interactions with children support their emotional well-being, sense of belonging, and ability to learn and thrive as my child care business begins or grows?

The Positive Child Interactions section supports Orange County’s future, current, and expanding child care providers by offering guidance to build strong, responsive, and emotionally supportive relationships with children. This section emphasizes the central role of intentional adult–child interactions in promoting self-regulation, communication, cooperation, and overall well-being through inclusive, developmentally appropriate practices.

Family Child Care Homes and Child Care Centers each create unique contexts for relationship-building. FCCs offer small, home-based environments where close, family-like relationships and mixed-age interactions provide daily opportunities for responsive caregiving and individualized support. Center-based providers work across classrooms and teams, requiring shared approaches and consistent practices that promote positive relationships and emotional safety for all children. This section highlights these differences while reinforcing a shared commitment to nurturing, respectful interactions.

Across both subsections, providers will find strategies aligned with evidence-based frameworks including but not limited to CLASS® 2nd Edition, CLASS® Environments, the Family Child Care Environment Rating Scale (FCCERS), the Pyramid Model, Conscious Discipline, and Embedded Learning Practices. Topics include responsive caregiving, positive guidance, culturally responsive communication, supporting social-emotional development, addressing challenging behavior, and promoting inclusion for children with IFSPs, IEPs, or individualized behavioral support needs.

Whether providers are new to the field, strengthening existing practices, or expanding services to support a broader range of children, this section offers practical guidance to help create caring, inclusive environments where relationships are intentional, interactions are supportive, and every child is recognized for their potential to learn and thrive.
