The Children and Families Commission of Orange County announced today the appointment of Richard Mungo, D.D.S., as its newest Commissioner. Members of the nine-person board are appointed by the Orange County Board of Supervisors and serve two-year terms.
Throughout his 30-year career as an Orange County pediatric dentist, Dr. Mungo has been a strong child advocate. His efforts have mirrored the Commission’s goal to ensure children have access to quality health care and community services so they are healthy and ready to learn by the time they enter school.
Dr. Mungo is the co-founder of Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County and previously served as chairman of the board. He currently serves as the medical director at Healthy Smiles, a consortium member for the Orange County Department of Education advisory board for school-based special care nurses, and the pediatric dentistry section chief at CHOC Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Mungo, who is currently in private practice in Huntington Beach, has long focused his clinical interests in providing dental services to Orange County’s at-risk children and families. He is a strong advocate for quality oral health for children, and focuses his community service on increasing access to care for the underserved and those with special health care needs.
Dr. Mungo is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, and is affiliated with the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Western Society of Pediatric Dentistry, USC School of Dentistry, and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry.
In addition to Dr. Mungo’s appointment, two existing Commissioners were reappointed at the April 2016 meeting. Dr. Maria Minon was reappointed as Commission Chair and Sandra Pierce was reappointed in the Early Education and Early Intervention Commissioner category. Dr. Mungo also was appointed to serve in that category.
“A critical part of the Commission’s ability to support children and strengthen the resources available to them are the individuals that serve on the Commission,” said Kimberly Goll, the Commission’s executive director. “Our mission requires a rare blend of passion, compassion and know-how, and each Commission member demonstrates all of these during their distinguished careers in Orange County.”
The nine Children and Families Commission of Orange County Commissioners administer the program funds that are consistent with the mission, goals and objectives of the Commission’s Strategic Plan.
