Family Provided Meals
Licensing standards still apply when families provide meals and snacks for their children. This includes food safety practices like proper storage, minimizing choking hazards, and safe handling. To help families understand expectations, providers should clearly communicate policies about:
- What types of meals and beverages are allowed
- Any restrictions (e.g. no soda, strict allergy rules)
- Safe storage and labeling practices
This information should be included in the parent handbook as well. Here is a short policy checklist that can be added.
Policy Checklist: When Families Provide Meals
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Communication to Families | Written policy shared at enrollment and as needed |
| Labeling | All food containers must be labeled with child’s full name and date |
| Storage | Providers must ensure food is stored safely (cold items kept cold) |
| Food Safety | No spoiled, expired, or contaminated food; monitor for choking hazards |
| Allergy Awareness | Maintain allergy lists and enforce restrictions (e.g., nut-free) |
| CACFP Participation | Meals brought from home are not reimbursable, unless part of a documented accommodation such as medical need |
| Documentation | Record of parent choice to send food and any medical accommodation, if applicable |
| Supervision | Children must be supervised during meals to ensure safe eating |
| Emergency Food Supply | Keep extra meals/snacks on hand in case a child arrives without food |
