Read Across America Day 2021: First 5 Orange County Commissioners read from their favorite early literacy books

Mar 2, 2021 | News & Announcements

It’s Read Across America Day!

In the spirit of the day, we captured First 5 Orange County Commissioners Debra Baetz and Jackie Filbeck, plus a parent, Nancy Vasquez, reading one of their favorite early literacy books.

Why is early literacy so important to First 5 Orange County?

Because we encourage reading and early learning to get babies and toddlers ready for kindergarten.

In the latest Conditions of Children in Orange County report, only 52% of the county’s young children were ready for kindergarten, and only 67% of third-grade students were at or below ELA standards in reading.

So take a look at our videos below and make sure you read to your little ones today and every day to give them an early start to learning!
