Professional Development and Continuous Quality Improvement
How am I investing in my own learning and growth—and the growth of my team—to strengthen the quality of care and experiences for children and families as my child care business begins or grows?
The Professional Development and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) section supports Orange County’s future, current, and expanding child care providers in strengthening their knowledge, skills, and professional growth to improve outcomes for children and families. This section brings together professional learning opportunities, resources, and strategies that support ongoing improvement across all early care and education settings.
Family Child Care Homes and Child Care Centers each approach professional development within different contexts. FCC providers often balance learning opportunities with the demands of operating a small, home-based business, while center-based providers support professional growth across teams, roles, and classrooms. This section acknowledges these differences while emphasizing shared responsibilities for ongoing learning, reflective practice, and quality improvement.
Across both subsections, providers will find guidance related to training requirements and opportunities, connections to local Resource & Referral (R&R) agencies, and strategies for building strong professional relationships and communication systems. Topics also include developing parent handbooks, creating family communication tools such as newsletters and handouts, planning family engagement activities, and strengthening partnerships with families. Additional guidance highlights pathways for continued growth, including coaching and mentoring, accreditation options, college coursework and credentials, and participation in professional associations and networks. Where requirements or resources differ for FCCs and centers, side-by-side comparisons and tables will clarify distinctions and local supports.
Whether providers are new to the field, deepening their practice, or leading expanded services and teams, this section supports a culture of lifelong learning helping educators build leadership capacity, stay informed about evolving best practices, and continuously strengthen the quality of care and education for every child.
