Providing a safe and healthy Child Care Center requires more than meeting licensing requirements. It requires a shared commitment among administrators, teaching teams, support staff, and families to consistently implement practices that protect children’s health, support their development, and foster positive learning experiences. Every classroom routine, safety procedure, and interaction contributes to creating an environment where children feel secure and families feel confident in the care their children receive.

Introduction

As discussed in the Licensing Component of the Child Care Business Toolkit, Child Care Centers must consistently follow health and safety regulations to protect the well-being of children in their care. Beyond obtaining and maintaining a child care license, programs are responsible for implementing daily practices that support children’s health, safety, and development while creating environments where families feel confident their children are safe, healthy, and well cared for.

Unlike Family Child Care programs, Child Care Centers often include multiple classrooms, teaching teams, support staff, and shared learning environments. This requires consistent procedures, ongoing communication, and strong leadership to ensure health and safety practices are implemented uniformly throughout the program.
